Solid Waste Fund (501)

Description

The Archuleta County Solid Waste Department is an enterprise fund financed through user rates and consisting of two transfer stations, a recycling center and a subtitle D landfill.  The Solid Waste Department personnel consists of six Solid Waste Operators and Attendants.  The Solid Waste Department provides environmentally sound solid waste disposal and recycling options for the businesses, residents, and visitors of Archuleta County. 

2024 Accomplishments

  • Purchased new office trailer building for Landfill operators replacing the older trailer 
  • Received approval for cell 4A repair from CDPHE 
  • Closed open compliance orders 
  • Passed Annual state inspection with minor citations 

2024 Challenges

  • Removing scrap metal off phase 3 cell 
  • Keeping ponding to a minimum 
  • Keeping vital records organized for state review  

Core Services:

  • Operate a permitted Solid Waste Disposal Landfill according to Federal and State regulations in order to dispose of the County’s waste in an environmentally sound manner 
  • Operate two transfer stations, to provide convenient disposal of solid waste to the residents of Archuleta County 
  • Operate a recycling center to provide for the processing and marketing of collected recyclable’s 
  • Provide supportive advice and recommendations for all aspects of proper disposal of items not accepted by the County’s solid waste disposal site 

2025 Goals

  • Pursue land acquisition of identified parcel between One in The Spirit Ranch and the Current Landfill
  • Construct Cell 4B
  • Continue advancements in the recycling program and strive for the most profitable markets for materials recycled
  • Begin constructing new Transfer Station
  • Added new contracts for collection of recycled material
